Letter dated 4 February 1870 from John M. Jones, Saron, Welsh Hills, Newark, to a friend. This gives an account of Rowlands and his family and the good farm on which they live. They have four horses, eight cattle, twenty sheep, twenty pigs, twenty turkeys and fifty chickens. They harvested twenty-seven loads of hay, a hundred and fifty bushels of wheat and five hundred bushels of corn.
A neighboring farm, of about twenty acres, is for sale for two hundred pounds. He asks his friend to tell let him know whether he wants it.
There is not much work for him in the winter – it is between March and November that he gets work. All the same, he emphasizes how wonderful the place is, and that he is better off there.
At the end of the letter he sends his regards to his friends and asks for news of Wales.
